Lumber / Sculpture

Wood has always been a fascinating material for contemporary professional artists and sculptors, who sometimes combine it with materials such as aluminium and stone.

Every sculpture piece requires its own variety of wood. For major commercial projects such as business signage, Maron lumber recommends a hardwood like Mahogany, White and Red Oak, Maple, Ash, and Yellow Birch, all of which are renowned for their resistance to weather.

For works of art, wood is considered to be more than just a material, taking on the role of a symbolic player, and the choice of the variety of wood is based as much on the colour as on the grain. Thanks to its versatility, wood is an outstanding medium for artistic inspiration.

Basswood, Butternut, Pine, and African and Brazilian Mahogany are varieties that Maron lumber offers to sculptors because of their unique characteristics. In fact, these rich wood species are dense and resistant to decay. The reddish brown sheen changes in the light, lending a unique dimension to the curves of the work, and the discrete grain enhances the richness of the created shapes.

Basswood, which is tender and white, is recommended for beginners and for seasoned sculptors alike. Easy to work with a gouge or a chisel, White Basswood is well suited for smaller projects, emphasizing the contrasts between light and dark, and is a wonder to paint.

Pine, which is resinous and soft, is appreciated for its yellowish tint and for its grain, which is sometimes very pronounced. Its affordability makes it accessible to sculptors of all types, and its resistance to decay makes it an ideal wood for sculpture projects that are intended for the outdoors.

Butternut is a soft wood that features a light shade of brown and an accented grain that is very popular. Walnut is also used for many collection pieces.

Maron lumber supplies the light user and the heavy user alike. Artists are important to us, and we treat them with the dedication that they deserve.
